Are you a skilled, experienced editor?
If so, we’d love to hear from you.
Our mission is to provide top-quality book editing services to authors.
Authors’ HQ Editors operate independently as freelancers, working directly with their clients and retaining the right to accept or decline projects.
Entry Test
If selected, qualified applicants will receive a short test that assesses both copy editing and proofreading skills. Developmental editors are exempt from the proofreading portion, but all candidates must complete the entry test. Results of failed tests will not be shared.
Please do not apply if you:
- Are not an experienced editor – you must have edited a minimum of 10 published books. This is non-negotiable.
- Have failed our entry tests within the last 2 years.
- Are unable to commit to a minimum of 1 year as an Authors’ HQ editor.
- Already manage a substantial editing workload from other clients.
Qualifications
- You must be a full-time freelancer (no additional jobs).
- You need a minimum of 5 years of editing experience, with a history of editing at least 10 published books (either traditionally or self-published).
- You must be able to check email frequently, as we expect responses within 3 hours during standard U.S. business hours (8 a.m. to 5 p.m. PST).
- Consistent availability is essential. If you’re often busy and seeking only occasional work, this may not be the right fit.
- You must reside in the U.S. This is non-negotiable.
Ethical Guidelines
Authors’ HQ Editors:
- Must use contracts or agreements that clearly outline the scope of work, rates (per word, page, or hour), and payment terms.
- Can only offer services they have qualified for through our testing process (e.g., developmental editors who don’t pass the copy editing test cannot offer those services).
- Cannot subcontract projects to other editors.
- Must not use AI tools.
Please note: No phone calls, emails, or use of the free consultation feature. We are not accepting trainees or entry-level applicants. Submissions without a list of published works will not be considered.
